Vetements x Reebok have teamed up on an emoji-heavy take on the InstaPump Fury.
The year 2017 has been weird enough, but here’s one more reason: there’s now an emoji-adorned sneaker that retails for nearly $1,000 in our midst. For this insane take on what’s already a wild shoe—the Reebok InstaPump Fury—we have the folks at Vetements to thank. Ugly running shoes and logo-covered kicks are both having a moment, but Vetements has really upped the ante on both trends with this one.
Vetements designer Demna Gvasalia knows a thing or two about the art of the sneaker troll. As the creative director of Balenciaga, he is the mastermind behind the most sought-after ugly kicks in the game: the Triple S sneakers. A different Vetements x Reebok collab, on what’s dubbed the “Genetically Modified” Reebok Pump, is big, bulky and brash in its own right. And as far as statement footwear goes, the Vetements x Reebok Logo InstaPump Fury is about as brash as it gets. Made from logo-covered leather, mesh, and rubber, the clunky basketball sneaker is decked out with eye-roll and kissing-face emoji on the tongue’s signature pumps. Is such a ridiculous-looking sneaker clickbait? Or something for sneakerheads to joke about? Probably—and that’s sort of the point. Gvasalia has already proven himself as one fashion’s most talented designers (Kanye West loves him, Balenciaga jumped at the chance to hire him, Vetements always sells out, and so on). As far as we’re concerned, he’s earned the right to have some fun.
As with all weird and wild Vetements products, the brand is in on the joke. Gvasalia and his brand of merry pranksters are hyper-fluent in memes and internet culture, so seeing the designer put emojis on an expensive sneaker should come as little surprise. Gvasalia’s never taken himself too seriously, and yet the designer still manages to create products that sell out instantly—and spark waves of online chatter. While we can’t say these sneakers are a must-have for everyone, they’re definitely worth talking about.
