If you have a penchant for donning turkey costumes and running wild in the streets (and frankly, who doesn’t?), I’ve got some events for you.
Ready to shake a tail feather? The Seacoast has plenty of opportunities to get your family moving this Thanksgiving season with local races and family fun runs. Check one out and start a new Thanksgiving tradition with your family this year.
The Hampton Falls Tiger Trot: On the Saturday before Thanksgiving, lace up your running shoes for the 5th Annual Tiger Trot Road Race. This race through picturesque Hampton Falls (think horse farms and foliage) includes a 1-mile kids’ race and a 5k run for both novice and elite runners. Hosted by and benefiting the Lincoln Akerman School PTO, the 1-Mile Kid Run is $15 (starts at 10 a.m.). 5K Run is $30 (starts at 10:30am). Visit tigertrot.org for more info or to register.
The following runs all take place on the morning of Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 23. It’s a wonderful way to start the holiday as a family.
Thanks for Giving 5K-10K: Start your Thanksgiving morning off right with the Southern District YMCA and Exeter Run Club’s 2nd annual ‘Thanks for Giving’ 5K and 10K family run/walk and kids’ fun runs. Kid’s Fun Runs (14 and under) will start at 7:45 a.m. No runner is too small as these runs will include an age 4 and under category. Race will start promptly at 8:30 a.m. 10K runners will do a double loop of the 5K course. Course will run through the beautiful community of Exeter. This will be a flat and fast course and especially encouraging for families to participate. Online registration closes at 11:59 pm on Nov. 17. Prices will increase $5 per category for day of registration. Day of Registration opens at 7 a.m. at the Exeter YMCA, 56 Linden Street, Exeter. Dover Turkey Trot: This family-friendly 5K is designed for runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. Serving as a fundraiser for the Garrison School PTA, proceeds benefit enrichment activities, family and community events, classroom supplies, artist in residency programs and field trips outside of the school district’s budget. Cost is $20 for adults; $10/Grade 4 and under (both prices increase by $5 if you register on race day). Prizes will be awarded to the overall first, second and third place winners, first, second and third place age group winners, and first place elementary age children grades K-4. 44th Annual Derry Turkey Trot 5K Road Race: This scenic 5K which starts at Galliens Town Beach takes you along the residential areas of Beaver Lake and actually has a video of the course on their website (try-before-you-buy race?). Pre-Registration: $17 for adults, free for kids 12 and under. Race Day Registration (includes Wednesday): $20 for adults, $10 for kids 12 and under. All participants are requested to bring a donation of any non-perishable canned good or dry food item to benefit the food pantries in the Greater Derry area. Race starts at 9am. Free Fall 5K: Hosted by the Rochester Runners Club, the Free Fall 5K course starts at the Community Center and finishes on Chestnut Hill Road. Costs are $10 for ages 13 and older; $5 ages 12 and under ($5 extra to register on race day). The race starts at 8:30 a.m. For more info or to register, visit freefall5K.com.
Seacoast Rotary Turkey Trot: Starting at Pierce Island and finishing at Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth, this annual 5K Turkey Trot welcomes families, friends, runners, walkers, strollers—anybody and everybody who wants to get their body moving pre-turkey. Costs: Youth (ages 12 and younger) $10; Teen (ages 13-19) $20; Adult (ages 20-plus) $30. Online registration deadline: Wednesday, Nov 22. 8th Annual Turkey Trot / Run / Walk / Waddle: (a.k.a. Huff’n for Stuff’n Road Race) Starting off at the Rye Junior High School, this family friendly 5K is the perfect precursor to the big meal. Non-perishables and can goods are gratefully accepted. All monies raised will go directly back into the local community to aid individuals and families this holiday season. Registration is at 9 a.m.; Race starts at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $15 per person; 2 for $25; family for $40. For more info, visit the Gosport Chowder Club Facebook page.
FYI, the Annual Turkey Day Dash to the Sea is cancelled for 2017.
